Join Chef “K” and the North East Catholic Charities of Kansas for an enjoyable evening of cooking to celebrate and benefit the women entrepreneurs of New Roots for Refugees, Tuesday August 26th from 7-9pm at the St. Pius X Catholic Church, 5601 Woodson Ave. Mission, Ks.
New Roots for Refugees helps refugee women put down new roots by helping them to start their own small farm businesses growing and selling vegetables. Farming is a familiar livelihood that offers a measure of self-determination and self-sufficiency, healthy food for families, extra income, and a context for settling into their new communities.
In the New Roots Program, participants start farming with significant training and support. As they develop more skills and establish their business, they move to greater financial and managerial independence. Eventually they receive proprietorship of their own piece of land and operate independently.
New Roots for Refugees, a program started by Catholic Charities, partners with the Kansas City Center for Urban Argiculture and is funded by the Department of Health and Human Servicesthrough the Refugee Agricultural Partnership Program.
The KCCUA training Farm is located at Juniper Gardens, a public housing site in Kansas City, Kansas where many of the participating families live.
New Roots for Refugees produce is available at:
- Farmers’ Community Market at Brookside (located at 63rd & Wornall Rd.) on Saturdays
- The KCK Greenmarket at Jupiter Gardens
- and through a pilot subscription program at St. Pius X Catholic Church
Proceeds fromt the cooking class will be used to provide gardening tools, tomato stakes or cages, utility wagons, plastic buckets, wooden crates, baskets, and brightly colored table cloths.
