Recently we were invited to fix lunches for Camp Win, an organization designed to empower young girls through sports.  We had a blast being with them and can’t wait to work with them in the future.  We received a letter from them and wanted to share it with you:

Dear Kiersten,winpic

Thanks so much to you and your staff at Bistro Kids for the fantastic meals, you all provided for Camp WIN 2009!  The healthy, kid-friendly meals got rave reviews and really helped to open the eyes of campers to a whole new way of healthy living.  Your organization is wonderful and I look forward to working with you again in the future!

Many Thanks,

Patty and Ashley

Thanks Camp WIN!  We were thrilled to be a part of the lives of your campers!

Time for Lunch. An “Eat-In” staged for Sept. 7th

Posted in Uncategorized on July 30, 2009 by bistrokids

Dear Chef K and Bistro Kids,

Because of your work with child nutrition and sustainability, I’m writing to let you know about Time for Lunch, a national campaign to provide America’s children with real food at school.

As we know, children who grow up enjoying food that is both delicious and good for them learn healthy eating habits that last throughout their lives. By giving schools the resources to serve real food and source this food from local farms, like you do in your classes and programs, we can make sure that the legacy we’re leaving our children is a future filled with opportunity, security and good health.

But to make that happen, our leaders in Congress need to hear that when it comes to our children and the legacy we’re leaving them, change can’t wait.

That’s why we’re organizing a National Eat-In for Labor Day, Sept. 7, 2009. On that day, people in communities across America will gather with their neighbors for public potlucks that send a clear message to our nation’s leaders: It’s time to provide America’s children with real food at school.

There are already 193 Eat-Ins scheduled to take place in 47 states.   There are three Eat-Ins scheduled in Missouri so far, and we would love your support for these events, or possibly some of your own.

An Eat-In is a potluck, plain and simple. Because it takes place in public, it’s also an opportunity to bring your community together, to get the media’s attention and to build support for serving children real food at school, and it can be a tool for supporting and sustaining the good work you do with Bistro Kids.

To learn more about Time for Lunch and the National Eat-In on Sept. 7, please check out our website: http://slowfoodusa.org/timeforlunch.

Thank you,

Stephanie Miller

Lexingto Missouri is hosting the Missouri PeachFest

Lexington to Host 2nd Annual Missouri PeachFest

Area Peach Growers Experiencing Good Weather

West Central Missouri peach orchard growers are experiencing great weather in anticipation of the upcoming peach harvest and look forward to the 2nd Annual Missouri Peachfest hosted by the growers in conjunction with the Lexington Area Chamber of Commerce in historic downtown Lexington, Missouri on August 1, 2009.

Waverly, Missouri grower Paul Peters of Peter’s Market stated, “After the total crop failure 2 years ago with the April freeze, this season is a welcome relief and we look forward to this years’ success.”   Sibley Orchard’s Rita Farrell reported, “The peaches are actually ready a little early this year. Some of the most popular varieties are ready right now.  We’re enjoying an exceptional harvest.”

The Lexington Area Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the activities surrounding the festival with plenty of children’s activities, locally grown produce of all kinds, peach ice cream, smoothies and floats and the local restaurants will be featuring peach dishes made only with locally grown peaches.  Local bands and choirs will entertain by singing and playing music on the courthouse steps.  Perhaps the most popular event of all, the peach bake-off featuring pies, cobblers, savory dishes and preserves will begin with the 12 p.m. check-in with a 1 p.m. judging on the historic courthouse steps. The local Historical Association will be selling whole pies and by the slice at the River Reader Book Store as part of a local fundraiser to restore the museum.

Most of the peaches will be available at area orchards, since peaches don’t traditionally travel well but there will be several local growers selling fresh peaches on the courthouse square. 10% off coupons will be available at the festival for those who come on Fest Day.

The 2nd Annual Missouri Peachfest festivities will take place in Lexington on August 1st, but the orchards will officially celebrate the harvest through August 9th.  They encourage visitors to sign up for drawings for gift baskets filled with wines, preserves and other orchard products.  Maps to the area orchards, with coupons for discounted products can be downloaded from the Lexington Chamber website at www.historiclexington.com

Classmates form business to benefit Autism Research

Posted in Uncategorized on July 17, 2009 by bistrokids

There is a great article in Sun Publications about Autism and the power of children in helping their friends who have Autism, live better lives.  Everyone of us has been touched by this disease in one way or another.  Our friend Zena sent this article to us to read and I was touched by the way the children stepped up to the plate to help their buddy Gus.  Take a minute to read the article and if you would like more information on how you can make a difference, you can visit the Autism Speaks website at…. www.autismspeaks.org or setup a bake sale for Gus “Goodies” by contacting lindseyfrazier@smsd.org
