Influencing positive change in children’s health by creating smarter school foodservice operations and improving access to healthier and more flavorful school meals.

The Problem
Obesity currently afflicts 23 million children and teenagers and the trend is growing.1 Since diet has a direct relationship to health, it is critical to educate school administrators, foodservice workers, teachers, and parents about the ways that making positive food choices and adopting healthy eating behaviors can reduce those risks and lead to a better quality of life. Schools enroll 95% of America’s young people and provide one to two meals to the majority of their students; they provide an optimal environment to shape children‘s eating habits for life.2

2008 WCR Scholarship and Internship Award

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , on August 4, 2008 by bistrokids

Chef “K” is one of 47 winners of the 2008 WCR ( Women Chefs & Restaurateurs) Scholarship and Internship program.   The program is built of the generosity of accomplished WCR members, who open up their kitchens, classrooms, dining rooms, wineries, and farms to share their time and talents.  This year’s program offered ten new scholarships at home and abroad, new opportunities that refect members evolving interests.  Judges reviewed some 215 applications, the second highest number ever.

The scholarship entitles Chef “K” to spend time with Chef Ann Cooper of the Berkley Unified School District who feeds over 9000 students every day through a program setup by the Chez Panisse Foundation in 2004,  who pivately raise money to feed the school children fresh organic food.  Like the Califorinia organizations, Bistro Kids is the first Farm 2 School program of it’s kind in Kansas or Missouri.  We strive to protect the environment, sustain local farmers and food producers, and change the way our children think about food.

Our mission is to become an intergral part of the school community by empowering, teaching and feeding as many students as possible kid friendly meals that are healthy, seasonal, delicious and whenever possible…..locally grown.
