Don’t Give the Dog Sugar with His Tea

Posted in Bistro Kids with tags , , , , , on April 26, 2012 by bistrokids

About this Project

Don’t Give the Dog Sugar With His Tea! tells the wild adventure of a dog who has had too much sugar. Children love the clanging and banging of the chase he has with the cat and mouse! But among the fun and laughter of the action packed story line, lies a subtle but extremely important point about the highs and lows that arise from eating excessive amounts of sugar.

The Facts:
- Over consumption of sugar creates unhealthy kids.
- Unhealthy kids under-perform in school.
- Unhealthy kids are more prone to obesity.
- Today, 1/3 of American children are obese.

Our homes, our schools, and the overwhelming majority of our pre-packaged foods are awash in sugar.

Through this fun, energetic and engaging story, my goal is to not only provide children with an opportunity to laugh, but to also provide them with an opportunity to begin to think about the impact that sugar can have on their minds and bodies. Parents too will be empowered to consider the sugar intake from the foods they prepare.

The illustrator, Mengyu Chen, is a world class illustrator who will bring this story to life through colorful, action-packed scenes. Her wonderfully talented illustrations (including the cover design) will ensure that parents and children are fully engaged as they read this story from beginning to end.

If you agree that it is time to begin reducing our consumption of sugar; if you want to support the work of helping to develop a generation of healthier, less sugared children, please join me in this effort. Your financial support will allow me to pay for the illustrations needed to complete this book. Once completed, I will begin introducing the story to bookstores, libraries, schools and online book selling venues.

Kellogg Foundation committed to fighting obesity

Dear Friends,

Today, First Lady Michelle Obama created an historic moment at the White House as she elevated childhood obesity and physical activity to the world’s stage. To reverse the trend of childhood obesity, she unveiled an ambitious new effort called “Let’s Move.” With five cabinet secretaries, members of Congress, physicians (including Regina Benjamin, U.S. Surgeon General – a former Kellogg National Fellow) and other health care professionals, athletes, corporate, foundation and nonprofit leaders on hand, she spoke of the criticality of taking steps to improve the health and well-being of children.
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation deeply supports the First Lady’s Let’s Move challenge to the nation to take action to aggressively tackle this problem. We also are proud to be a founding member of a complementary effort called the Partnership for a Healthier America, along with our peers at the California Endowment, Kaiser Permanente, Nemours, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.

This independent, nonpartisan organization will focus on four key goals: offering parents the tools and information they need; getting healthier food into our nation’s schools; ensuring that all our families have access to healthy, affordable food in their communities; and increasing opportunities for kids to be physically active, both in and out of school. Moreover, this organization will accelerate and scale up existing efforts addressing childhood obesity and to facilitate commitments towards the First Lady’s national goals.
Efforts like the Partnership for a Healthier America are a strong complement to our ongoing work, especially that of Food & Community. We will continue to use our resources to support innovative work on the ground, convene partners and grow through tools like social networking. Together, we will help to make real a difference in the systems, policies and efforts that can help children, particularly vulnerable children, thrive.

Food & Community’s on-the-ground efforts today prove we can achieve success and reverse childhood obesity within a generation. We continue to be inspired by the determination and ingenuity demonstrated by Kellogg Foundation grantees who are contributing to this common goal of a new generation of kids who have reversed the trend of childhood obesity and other health disparities. This generation and those who follow will reap a lifetime of rewards.
Please share this exciting news with your friends, partners and networks. And thank you for your commitment to vulnerable children and families.

                              Onward,

                             Sterling K. Speirn
                            President and Chief Executive Officer
